What is Contrast Mammography?

Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) combines standard mammography with the administration of iodinated contrast material.

Intravenous iodinated contrast media is used in CEM to enhance the visualization of tumor neovascularity. Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) has been shown to enhance accuracy compared to digital mammography and ultrasound in women with abnormal screening results or symptoms of breast cancer.

It also approaches the accuracy of breast MRI for preoperative staging and monitoring response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. CEM is also known by other names, including contrast-enhanced spectral mammography, contrast-enhanced digital mammography, and contrast-enhanced dual-energy mammography.

Indications for Contrast Mammography

Benefits of Contrast Mammography

  • Better performance than Mammograms
(more information, identify more cancers and conclusion)
  • Timed and fast (longer than diagnostic including preparatory time)
  • Adds on Mammo unit
  • Radiation Dose within the range from other tests
  • Can detect cancers obscured by glandular tissue on Mammograms
  • Can be performed during diagnostic appointment
