Frequently Asked Questions

Are the procedures safe? Do you use radiation?

Very low energy x-rays are used during a Mammogram and we use the latest low dose technology to reduce this exposure as much as reasonably achievable. Our Hologic Mammography machine operates well within the recommended guidelines and quality assurance is performed daily, weekly, monthly and annually. We record our dose levels and compare them to other services to ensure our equipment is performing at the highest levels.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image and is a very safe modality with no risks associated with this technology.

What do I wear to my appointment?

We encourage all patients to wear a firm bra and loose comfortable clothes. It is best to wear a two piece garment (to remove the top half).

Please avoid wearing any deodorant as this can affect the procedures we perform.

Do I require a referral?

Yes, we require a referral from a GP or Specialist Consultant detailing information about your relevant medical history, the breast(s) affected and the type of examination appropriate for your condition.

Our specialist radiologists may also require additional imaging to be performed, to ensure a complete and accurate diagnosis. Your doctor can contact our practice for more information on ‘how to refer’ to our clinic.

How much will my examination cost?

Malvern Breast Imaging is a private practice, our fees ensure we can provide an exceptional service by highly specialised professionals. Our practice can provide detailed information on individual fees prior to your examination. Fees can vary depending on the type and complexity of the procedures we perform.  Whilst Medicare does cover some of the charges associated with our services, unfortunately it does not cover the full amount. Our reception team can provide advice on any out of pocket expenses via email and over the phone.

We require all examination fees to be paid on the day of your appointment, Malvern Breast Imaging prefers EFTPOS, MasterCard and Visa for payment on the day. We electronically lodge a Medicare claim on your behalf, so you will receive the refund into the bank account nominated with Medicare Australia.

Please do not hesitate to contact one of our friendly receptionists and we will be able to assist you further.
